Through March

As part of the Lodi Reads Leopold celebration, from now through the end of March the Lodi Woman’s Club Library is hosting a collection of editorial, conservation cartoons by J.N. “Ding” Darling, a friend, contemporary and fellow visionary of Aldo Leopold. Stop in at the library and learn about another conservation pioneer.

The Greatest Good: A U.S. Forest Service Centennial Film
6:30-8:30 at the Lodi Woman’s Club Library
Free and open to the public

Whether it is the protection of endangered species or meeting the needs of a growing public, the fate of public lands is constantly challenged by the constraints of democracy. Visionary foresters Gifford Pinchot and Aldo Leopold shaped the debate over land stewardship for a hundred years. Their journey from the “wise use” of resources to the idea of a “land ethic” has defined the evolution of the Forest Service and the management of National Forests and Grasslands. In a breathtaking high definition documentary, The Greatest Good takes the audience on a journey as compelling as it is uniquely American.

Saturday, March 7, 2009

The first full weekend in March has been commemorated by the Wisconsin State Legislature and Governor James Doyle as Aldo Leopold Weekend, a time to celebrate the life and works of this Wisconsin conservation leader. The legislation for Aldo Leopold Weekend grew out of the Lodi Reads Leopold event that began in March of 2000.

Lodi Reads Leopold continues this year with an all-day event on Saturday, March 7th. The schedule and contact information follows. The readings and community forum are free and will take place at the Lodi Woman’s Club Public Library, 130 Lodi Street in Lodi. A free will monetary donation is requested for the lunch, with all donations to be given to the Lodi Food Pantry. Lunch will be served at the Masonic Lodge on First Street, just across from the post office.

9:00 a.m. – 10:15 a.m. Readings and youth participation

Members of the community and invited guests will read aloud from A Sand County Almanac and other works by Leopold. (Feel free to bring your copy of SCA and follow along!) Local youth will be featured throughout the day presenting readings, dramatic works and art that reflect the ideas of Leopold. There will also be displays at the Library.

10:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Break
10:30 a.m. – Noon Community Forum, “Lodi Valley’s Environmental Assets: How Can They Impact Our Local Economy?”

Aldo Leopold was well aware of the relationship between the local environment and the economy of local communities. This year’s community forum will explore how environmental assets in the Lodi Valley might impact the local economy. This promises to be an informative and interesting forum.

Noon – 1:30 p.m. Lunch at the Masonic Lodge, First Street

Join your friends and neighbors for lunch, sponsored by AMCORE Bank. A free will monetary donation is encouraged, with all donations going to the Lodi Food Pantry; advance registration not required. This is a great opportunity to discuss the ideas you heard at the Community Forum.

1:30 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. Readings and youth participation

Continue with reading of Leopold’s works interspersed with youth representations.
