On March 4, 1948 Aldo Leopold opened the introduction to A Sand County Almanac as follows: “There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot. These essays are the delights and dilemmas of one who cannot.”

On March 7, 2009 --- sixty-one years after Leopold wrote those words --- Lodi and surrounding communities will come together once again to celebrate Aldo Leopold’s legacy. The 10th Annual Lodi Reads Leopold event will be a day to hear the words of Leopold and talk about what those words mean for the Lodi Valley community. Come celebrate Aldo Leopold with an event created for those “who cannot live without wild things.”

The 2009 Lodi Reads Leopold event will take place on Saturday, March 7th with readings of Leopold’s works by local citizens, including youth, as well as youth representations of Leopold’s ideas through other creative expression. As part of the morning program there will be a community forum that will focus on “Lodi Valley’s Environmental Assets: How Can They Impact Our Local Economy?” A noon lunch will provide an opportunity to continue the discussion that took place during the community forum. Readings and representations of Leopold’s ideas will continue after lunch.

We are deeply saddened that one of our Lodi Reads Leopold team members, Peg Hilliker, passed away in 2008. Peg believed in this event and put a lot of time and energy into making it a success. We miss her presence among us. This year’s Lodi Reads Leopold is dedicated to Peg.
