On March 4, 1948 Aldo Leopold opened the introduction to A Sand County Almanac as follows: “There are some who can live without wild things and some who cannot. These essays are the delights and dilemmas of one who cannot.”

In March 2011 --- Sixty-three years after Leopold wrote those words --- people from the Lodi area will come together once again to celebrate Aldo Leopold’s legacy. The 12th Annual Lodi Reads Leopold event will be a month-long opportunity to share the words of Leopold and talk about what those words mean for the Lodi Valley. Come celebrate Aldo Leopold with an event created for those “who cannot live without wild things.”

The 2011 Lodi Reads Leopold event is coordinated by the Friends of Scenic Lodi Valley and will consist of four parts. On Saturday, March 5 there will be a brief period of reading from “A Sand County Almanac” followed by a community forum that will focus on “Lodi Going Green.” In addition, volunteer readers will be attending meetings of local organizations throughout the month of March to read the words of Leopold. People will come together on Monday, March 28th for a discussion of the book, “Last Child in the Woods.” And on Saturday, March 26, everyone is invited to Prairie du Sac for a free showing of the documentary, “Green Fire: Aldo Leopold & A Land Ethic for Our Time,” featuring students from Lodi Elementary School.
